Women of Power

LEADERS, DOCTORS, AND WITCHES

The descendants of the Anglo-Saxon invaders of North America have traditionally viewed Native American women as powerless drudges, subservient to the chiefs and braves who ostensibly dominated tribal life. While it is true that in many Indian societies women had little opportunity to hold office or sit on the council, this does not mean that they had no chance to exercise power and authority outside of their homes.

Just as not every man was a chief, not every woman sought a position of influence, but in most tribes those women who were natural leaders had some accepted outlet by which to express their talents. Where the structure of their society allowed, some women became political leaders. Other Indian women sought power by becoming medicine women or witches.
